Barrier theory
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003839
The concept explaining how a topographic feature, such as a mountain range, obstructs atmospheric flow and forces air to ascend. This forced lifting, known as orographic lift, causes the air to cool, leading to condensation, cloud formation, and precipitation on the windward side. The descending, warming air on the leeward side creates a drier climate known as a rain shadow.
