Ekman pumping
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005299
The vertical motion of water or air induced by the divergence or convergence of Ekman transport within the boundary layer. When Ekman transport diverges, water or air is drawn up from below (upwelling), and when it converges, fluid is pushed downwards (downwelling). This process is a key mechanism for nutrient upwelling in coastal ocean regions and for driving vertical motion in atmospheric boundary layers.
