Ekman transport

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005301

The net motion of a fluid as the result of a balance between the Coriolis force and turbulent drag forces. In the ocean, this process causes surface water to move at a 90-degree angle to the direction of the wind, to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. This transport is responsible for coastal upwelling and downwelling, which affects ocean temperatures and biological productivity.
