Geostrophic

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005940

Describing a state of atmospheric or oceanic flow where the Coriolis force exactly balances the pressure gradient force. This balance results in winds or currents flowing parallel to isobars or isopycnals, respectively. Geostrophic flow is an idealized condition often approximated in large-scale atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, particularly away from the equator and boundary layers.
