Alveolitis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000462
An inflammation of the walls of the alveoli, the small air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs. The condition results from an immunologic reaction to inhaled antigens, including organic dusts, molds, or certain chemicals, leading to an influx of inflammatory cells. Chronic forms of alveolitis are characterized by the formation of granulomas and can progress to pulmonary fibrosis, permanently scarring lung tissue.
