Secondary pollution
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010625
Air pollutants that are not directly emitted from a source but form in the atmosphere through chemical reactions involving primary pollutants. Examples include ozone, which forms from nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds in the presence of sunlight, and sulfuric acid, formed from sulfur dioxide. These reactions often lead to more harmful substances than the initial emissions.
