Secondary poisoning
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010624
The adverse effect on an organism resulting from the consumption of another organism that has accumulated a toxic substance. This occurs when a predator or scavenger ingests prey containing a chemical, often a pesticide or heavy metal, that was not directly administered to the consumer. The concentration of the toxicant can increase at higher trophic levels through biomagnification.
