Trophic dilution
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012315
A decrease in the concentration of a contaminant in organisms at successively higher trophic levels within a food web. This phenomenon occurs when the contaminant is metabolized or excreted more efficiently than it is accumulated, or when the contaminant is diluted by the biomass of the consumer. It is the opposite of biomagnification.
