Biomagnification
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001290
The process by which the concentration of a substance, such as a persistent pollutant, increases in organisms at successively higher trophic levels in a food chain. This occurs when organisms consume other organisms that have accumulated the substance in their tissues. For example, mercury levels can biomagnify in aquatic food webs.
