Bioluminescence
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001289
The emission of light from a living organism as the result of a chemical reaction. This chemiluminescence process involves the oxidation of a substrate, luciferin, catalyzed by an enzyme, luciferase, which generates an excited-state product that decays by emitting a photon. The color of the emitted light, ranging from blue to red, depends on the specific chemical structures of the luciferin and luciferase involved.
