Chemiluminescence

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001982

The emission of light as a result of a chemical reaction, producing electronically excited species that release their energy as photons upon returning to a lower energy state. The process does not require an external light source to initiate the emission, as the energy comes directly from the chemical transformation itself. A well-known example is the reaction involving luminol, which produces a characteristic blue glow in the presence of an oxidizing agent and a catalyst.
