Blue shift
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001398
A shift of a spectral band to a higher frequency or shorter wavelength, observed in absorption, emission, or Raman spectra. This phenomenon is caused by changes in the chemical environment of the chromophore, such as a change in solvent polarity or the introduction of certain substituents onto the molecule. The term is the opposite of a red shift, which describes a shift to lower frequency or longer wavelength.
