Solvent shift

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011030

A change in the position of an absorption or emission band in a spectrum, typically observed in ultraviolet-visible or infrared spectroscopy, when the solvent is changed. This shift results from differential stabilization of the ground and excited states by solvent-solute interactions. A shift to longer wavelengths is called a bathochromic shift, while a shift to shorter wavelengths is a hypsochromic shift.
