Solvatochromism
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011019
The phenomenon where the color or spectral properties (e.g., absorption or emission maxima) of a chemical compound change significantly with a change in the solvent. This effect arises from differential stabilization of the ground and excited electronic states by solvent-solute interactions. It is commonly observed in highly polar or charge-transfer compounds and is used to probe solvent polarity.
