Polarity

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009076

A measure of the distribution of electric charge within a molecule, arising from differences in electronegativity between bonded atoms, leading to the formation of dipoles. A molecule is considered polar if it possesses a net dipole moment, meaning the vector sum of all individual bond dipoles is non-zero. Polarity significantly influences a substance's physical properties, such as solubility, boiling point, and intermolecular forces.
