Polarity

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002841

The sign convention for seismic reflections, indicating whether an increase in acoustic impedance at a geological boundary is represented by a positive (peak) or negative (trough) amplitude on a seismic trace. It defines the relationship between the seismic wavelet and the physical properties of the subsurface. Polarity can be normal (SEG normal) or reverse (SEG reverse), depending on the acquisition system and processing sequence.
