An abbreviation for geomagnetic polarity time scale, the dated sequence of reversals of Earth's magnetic field recorded in rocks and in magnetic anomalies on the ocean floor. Each normal or reversed interval, called a chron, is numbered and tied to absolute ages, so a magnetic pattern measured in a core or marine anomaly can be matched to the scale. The most recent reversal, the Brunhes-Matuyama boundary, dates to about 780,000 years ago.
