Gamma ray, a type of electromagnetic radiation emitted by naturally radioactive elements present in rocks, such as potassium, uranium, and thorium. A gamma ray log measures the natural radioactivity of formations, which is primarily used to distinguish shale from non-shale lithologies. Shales typically exhibit higher gamma ray readings due to their higher concentration of radioactive minerals.
