Potassium

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002882

A naturally radioactive element whose isotope potassium-40 emits gamma rays at 1.46 MeV, an energy that lets natural gamma spectroscopy tools separate it from the thorium and uranium series. Potassium occurs in clay minerals such as illite and also in micas and potassium feldspars, which are not clays. Its log is used to estimate clay or shale content, with the caveat that feldspathic or micaceous sands also read high.
