Potassium mud
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002884
A type of water-based drilling fluid containing potassium ions, typically from salts like potassium chloride (KCl) or potassium formate, to inhibit the swelling and dispersion of clay-rich shales. The potassium ions fit into the clay lattice structure, binding the clay layers together and preventing water hydration. Potassium concentrations in these mud systems are maintained between 3% and 10% by weight, depending on the reactivity of the shales being drilled.
