Clay swelling
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000691
The expansion of clay minerals within a reservoir rock when they come into contact with certain fluids, particularly fresh water. This phenomenon can reduce permeability and damage the reservoir, hindering oil and gas production. Inhibitors such as potassium chloride or polymers are often added to injected fluids to mitigate swelling.
