Cationic
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000593
Relating to a molecule or functional group that carries a net positive electrical charge. Cationic substances, such as certain polymers and surfactants used in drilling fluids, are attracted to negatively charged surfaces like clay minerals. This property is used in shale inhibitors, where cationic molecules adsorb onto clay surfaces to prevent them from swelling and dispersing into the mud system.
