Clay-water interaction

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000693

The complex physicochemical process that occurs when clay minerals in a drilling fluid or a formation are exposed to water. Water molecules adsorb onto clay surfaces and penetrate between the crystalline layers, causing the clay to swell, disperse, and alter the fluid's rheological properties. The degree of interaction depends on the type of clay, the water's salinity, and the presence of inhibiting ions like potassium or calcium.
