Potassium ion
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002883
A positively charged ion of potassium (K+), commonly introduced into drilling fluids to inhibit the hydration and swelling of reactive clays and shales. Potassium ions exchange with other cations on clay surfaces, leading to a more stable clay structure. Potassium chloride (KCl) is a common source of these ions in drilling muds.
