Calcium mud
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000521
A type of water-based drilling fluid where calcium ions are intentionally maintained at a relatively high concentration to inhibit hydration and dispersion of reactive shales. These muds typically use calcium chloride or gypsum as the primary source of calcium. They are effective in drilling troublesome shales but require careful control of pH and other additives to prevent flocculation.
