Calcium naphthenate

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000522

A waxy, insoluble precipitate that can form in crude oil, particularly heavy crude, due to the reaction of naphthenic acids with calcium ions present in formation water. This substance can cause operational problems by forming emulsions, increasing viscosity, or depositing as scale in production equipment and pipelines. Its formation is influenced by pH, temperature, and the concentration of calcium and naphthenic acids.
