Calcium oxide

A chemical compound, CaO, also known as quicklime, used in drilling fluids primarily as a source of calcium ions and to increase pH. When mixed with water, it reacts exothermically to form calcium hydroxide. It is sometimes used in oil-based muds to scavenge water and maintain emulsion stability.
