Calcium hydroxide

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000520

A strong base, Ca(OH)2, known as hydrated lime, added to water-based mud to raise pH and supply calcium ions. In lime muds the calcium exchanges onto clay and slows hydration of reactive shale, and excess undissolved lime acts as a reserve of alkalinity; lime also precipitates carbonate contamination as calcium carbonate. Its solubility is low, under 2 grams per liter at room temperature, and it falls as temperature rises.
