Sodium bicarbonate

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003489

A chemical compound added to drilling fluids to treat contamination from soluble calcium ions. It reacts with calcium hydroxide from cement or calcium chloride from formation water, precipitating calcium as insoluble calcium carbonate. This treatment lowers the fluid's pH and mitigates the flocculating effects of calcium on clay-based mud systems, with a typical treatment ratio being 0.9 pounds of sodium bicarbonate per pound of cement.
