Potential field

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004419

A physical field, such as gravity or magnetism, that can be described by the gradient of a scalar potential function. In exploration geophysics, measurements of these fields at the Earth's surface reveal variations in subsurface density or magnetic susceptibility. These variations are interpreted to map basement structures, salt domes, and sedimentary basin geometry, with gravity surveys measuring changes in gravitational acceleration and magnetic surveys measuring the total magnetic field intensity.
