Gravity anomaly
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001737
A localized deviation in the Earth's gravitational field from the expected theoretical value, after accounting for factors such as elevation, latitude, and topography. These anomalies are caused by lateral variations in the density of subsurface rocks and can indicate geological features like salt diapirs, basement uplifts, or sedimentary basins. Gravity anomalies are measured in milligals (mGal) and are used in exploration to map subsurface structures.
