Gravity drainage
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001738
A reservoir drive mechanism where oil flows downwards under the influence of gravity, displacing gas or water upwards. This process is most effective in highly permeable, steeply dipping reservoirs or fractured reservoirs where fluids can move freely. It is often enhanced by injecting gas into the top of the reservoir to create an artificial gas cap.
