Magnetic field

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002253

A region around a magnetic material or a moving electric charge where a magnetic force is exerted on other magnetic materials or moving charges. In geophysics, the Earth's magnetic field is measured to detect variations caused by subsurface geological structures containing magnetic minerals. These variations are used to map basement depths, faults, and igneous intrusions.
