Dipole field
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001099
A magnetic or electric field generated by two equal and opposite poles or charges separated by a small distance. The Earth's main magnetic field approximates a dipole field, with north and south magnetic poles, which is the basis for magnetic surveying methods used in exploration. In borehole logging, dipole acoustic tools generate a flexural wave that is sensitive to shear-wave velocity, even in slow formations.
