Dipping bed

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001100

A sedimentary rock layer that is inclined at an angle to the horizontal, rather than lying flat. This inclination results from tectonic forces such as folding or faulting after deposition. The angle of dip is measured relative to a horizontal plane and is a key parameter in structural geology for mapping subsurface formations and identifying potential hydrocarbon traps.
