Flexural mode

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004326

A dispersive acoustic mode of a fluid-filled borehole, excited by a dipole source, in which the borehole wall is displaced from side to side as the wave travels along the hole. At low frequency its velocity approaches the formation shear velocity, so it is used to measure shear slowness in slow formations where no shear headwave exists, and its splitting reveals shear anisotropy. It differs from compressional and shear headwaves, which are refracted along the wall at fixed velocities.
