Converted wave
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000848
A seismic wave that changes its mode of propagation, such as a P-wave (compressional wave) converting to an S-wave (shear wave) or vice versa, upon encountering an interface in the subsurface. These waves provide additional information about rock properties, especially shear moduli. They are recorded by three-component geophones and analyzed for anisotropy and fluid content.
