Shear wave

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003365

A seismic wave in which particle motion is perpendicular to the direction of propagation. It cannot travel through fluids, and its velocity depends on the rock's shear modulus and density but hardly at all on the pore fluid. Comparing S-wave and P-wave data therefore separates fluid effects from lithology, and shear waves are also used to characterize anisotropy and fracture networks.
