Shear wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008831
A type of wave in which the particles of the medium oscillate perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. While commonly associated with solids (e.g., seismic S-waves), analogous phenomena can occur in fluids under specific conditions, such as in highly stratified or rotating atmospheres. These waves are distinct from compressional waves where particle motion is parallel to propagation.
