Body waves
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003965
Seismic waves that travel through the interior of the Earth, as opposed to surface waves that travel along its surface. Body waves are generated by earthquakes or large explosions and consist of two principal types: primary (P-waves) and secondary (S-waves). P-waves are compressional and travel faster, while S-waves are shear waves that cannot propagate through liquid, such as the Earth's outer core.
