Wind wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010272

  1. A surface wave on a body of water, such as an ocean or lake, generated by the transfer of energy from wind blowing across the water surface. These waves are characterized by their height, wavelength, and period, which depend on wind speed, duration, and fetch. They are a primary component of the sea state.

  2. Local, short period waves generated from the action of wind on the water surface (as opposed to swell). Commonly referred to as waves. In a National Weather Service Coastal Marine Forecast or Offshore Forecast, wind waves are used when swells are described in the forecast.
    or
Waves generated by the local wind blowing at the time of observation.
