Longitudinal wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007036

A wave in which the oscillations of the medium's particles are parallel to the direction of energy propagation. In the atmosphere, sound waves are a primary example, where compressions and rarefactions of air molecules travel through the medium. These waves are responsible for the transmission of sound and can also be generated by atmospheric disturbances.
