Acoustic wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003262
A mechanical wave that propagates through a medium by oscillations of the medium's particles, transmitting energy without net transport of the material. In the atmosphere these are sound waves, longitudinal waves made of alternating compressions and rarefactions of the air. The speed of an acoustic wave in air is about 343 meters per second at 20 degrees Celsius and about 331 meters per second at 0 degrees Celsius, rising roughly 0.6 meters per second for each degree of warming.
