Pressure wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008137

A disturbance that propagates through a fluid medium, like the atmosphere, characterized by alternating regions of higher and lower pressure. These waves transfer energy from one point to another without a net displacement of the medium itself, and are generated by phenomena including explosions, volcanic eruptions, and meteorological events. The speed of a pressure wave, also known as an acoustic wave, is the speed of sound, which is approximately 343 meters per second in dry air at 20°C.
