Pressure-change chart

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008138

A synoptic weather map that displays the net change in atmospheric pressure at sea level over a specified period, such as 3, 12, or 24 hours. Lines of equal pressure change, called isallobars, are drawn to identify areas of rising (isallobaric highs) and falling (isallobaric lows) pressure. Forecasters use these charts to determine the movement and development of pressure systems, as regions of greatest pressure fall often precede advancing low-pressure centers.
