Sound wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009057
A longitudinal wave that transmits sound energy through a medium by causing particles to oscillate parallel to the direction of wave propagation. In the atmosphere, these waves are pressure disturbances that travel at a speed dependent on air temperature and density. Thunder is a prominent example of a sound wave generated by atmospheric processes.
