Sounder
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009058
An instrument carried on satellites, aircraft, or balloons that measures atmospheric properties at multiple vertical levels. It works by sensing electromagnetic radiation emitted or reflected by the atmosphere at different frequencies, with each frequency corresponding to a different altitude range. Data from sounders provide vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, and trace gas concentrations used in weather forecasting and climate monitoring.
