High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006245
An instrument carried on meteorological satellites to measure the vertical temperature and moisture profiles of the atmosphere. It works by sensing infrared radiation emitted by atmospheric gases, such as carbon dioxide and water vapor, across multiple spectral channels. The HIRS/4 version, flown on NOAA and MetOp satellites, has 19 infrared channels and one visible channel, providing data for numerical weather prediction models.
