Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006543
A satellite-borne instrument that measures the spectrum of infrared radiation emitted by the Earth's surface and atmosphere. It uses Fourier transform spectroscopy to achieve high spectral resolution, providing detailed information about the vertical profiles of temperature, water vapor, and ozone. The first such instrument, the IRIS (Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer), was flown on the Nimbus 3 and 4 satellites in 1969 and 1970.
