Scanning Microwave Spectrometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008680

A satellite-borne instrument that measures thermal microwave radiation emitted from the Earth's surface and atmosphere at multiple wavelengths. These measurements are used to infer vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and water vapor content, providing data even in cloudy regions where infrared sounders are less effective. The Scanning Microwave Spectrometer (SCAMS) was one of the instruments carried aboard the Nimbus 6 satellite, launched in 1975.
